Paid a lot for your website? Here's why it still underperforms.

It looks good, it cost real money, and it still isn't bringing in what you expected. In most cases the problem isn't the design. It's the code underneath, and there's a free tool that shows you exactly where it falls short.

The pattern we see over and over

A business owner pays an agency, a freelancer, or a monthly platform to build a website. It launches, it looks professional, and everyone is happy with it for a while. Then the questions start: why is traffic flat, why do visitors leave so fast, why does a competitor with a plainer site show up ahead of us?

The honest answer is usually that the website's code isn't up to par. Design is what people see. Code is what search engines, browsers, and phones actually process, and a beautiful page can be slow, hard to read for assistive technology, and confusing to search engines all at once.

What Google PageSpeed Insights measures

Google PageSpeed Insights runs Google's Lighthouse test on any public page and scores it from 0 to 100 in four categories:

  • Performance: how quickly the page shows up and becomes usable, based on metrics like Largest Contentful Paint and Total Blocking Time, weighted as described in Google's scoring documentation.
  • Accessibility: whether people using screen readers, keyboards, or larger text can use the page.
  • Best Practices: security and modern coding standards.
  • SEO: whether search engines can read and understand the page.

This matters beyond a number on a screen. Google says its ranking systems use Core Web Vitals, the real-world speed and stability metrics, as part of page experience. Slow pages also lose visitors before they ever see your offer, which we've collected research on in our speed and conversion guide.

Why an expensive website can still score poorly

Price and code quality aren't the same thing. The most common causes we find in our published audits are:

  • Page-builder and theme bloat. Builders load code for every feature they offer, whether your page uses it or not.
  • Oversized images. Photos uploaded at camera size and shrunk by the browser, instead of served at the size the screen needs.
  • Render-blocking scripts. Chat widgets, trackers, and plugins the page has to wait on before it can show anything.
  • Missing structured data. Without schema markup, search engines and AI tools have to guess what your business is.
  • Accessibility gaps. Low-contrast text and unlabeled buttons that lock some visitors out.

None of these are visible in a design review. They only show up when the code itself is tested.

Built your site with AI? The same rules apply.

Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Lovable, Bolt, and v0 can produce a working website in an afternoon. That's genuinely useful, but a site that works isn't the same as a site that scores 100 across the board, and the gap gets wider once you add a background video.

A background video is heavy, and loading it the wrong way drags every score down. Done right, it doesn't have to: our own homepage plays a background video and scored 100/100/100/100 on mobile in a live Google PageSpeed Insights test on September 29, 2026.

Check your own website in about a minute

  1. Go to pagespeed.web.dev.
  2. Paste your homepage address and press Analyze.
  3. Make sure the Mobile tab is selected, since most visitors are on phones.
  4. Look at the four circles. Anything below 90 is marked orange or red for a reason, and the report lists what caused it.

Run it a couple of times. Scores can vary a little between runs, but a site with a real code problem will fall short every time.

What a re-code actually changes

A re-code keeps your logo, photos, and content, and rewrites the code underneath them. Every ZenMasterWorks re-code is delivered at a verified 100/100/100/100 mobile score, with SEO and AEO structure built in, as fast as 24–72 hours depending on workload. You get the live test link so you, or anyone else, can re-run it.

Pricing is fixed and paid upfront: a homepage re-code starts at $99, and full builds and re-codes are quoted by scope on our pricing page. You can see real results with re-runnable scores on our work page.

The honest limits

A perfect score doesn't guarantee a top ranking; nobody controls Google's algorithm, and Google itself treats page experience as one signal among many. Scores can also drop later if new scripts or widgets are added, which our PageSpeed standard page explains in detail. What a perfect score does guarantee is that your code is no longer the thing holding the site back.

Key takeaways

The short version

  • An expensive website can still underperform because its code isn't up to par, even when the design looks great.
  • Google PageSpeed Insights scores Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO from 0 to 100, and anyone can run it free.
  • AI-built sites and sites with background video can reach 100/100/100/100 too, as our own video homepage shows.
  • A ZenMasterWorks re-code keeps your design and content, starts at $99, and is paid upfront.
