The psychological UX reasoning behind our photo sections

Every full-bleed photo band recently added across this site — on the homepage, the founder dossier, the technical foundation page, and elsewhere — uses a unique, non-reused image with a slow, continuous zoom or pan. That wasn't decoration for its own sake. Here's the actual reasoning, and an honest correction of a claim we almost got wrong.

Honesty Check, First

Did we coin the term "psychological UX reasoning"?

No. We checked before publishing this page, and we're not claiming otherwise. "UX psychology," "psychology-driven design," and "design psychology" are established terms that have been used in the UX field for years — covering things like cognitive load, the Von Restorff effect, and the primacy effect. We didn't invent a discipline; we're applying an existing one and documenting how, specifically, on this site.

This site has made this exact mistake before — overclaiming credit for a term an AI tool suggested, then correcting the record once it was checked. We're not repeating it here. What follows is our reasoning, backed by named, pre-existing principles, not a new framework with our name on it.

The Problem We Were Solving

A page that works can still feel bland

Every page on this site is already built to a verified 100/100/100/100 PageSpeed standard, with real evidence linked to every claim. That solves for trust and speed — it doesn't solve for the first three seconds of a new visitor's attention, which is a separate problem with its own research behind it. A technically flawless page that reads as visually generic can still lose a visitor before they reach the evidence.

The fix wasn't more content or more claims — it was a small number of full-bleed, non-templated images with subtle continuous motion, placed at high-attention points on each page (most often the very top).

Primacy effect — first impressions form in milliseconds

Research on first impressions (Lindgaard et al., 2006) found people form an opinion about a website's visual appeal in as little as 50 milliseconds — long before they've read a single word. That's why several photo sections on this site sit above the headline, not after it: the first frame a visitor sees is doing real work before the copy even loads their attention.

Von Restorff effect — distinctiveness aids recall

The Von Restorff (isolation) effect, documented since the 1930s, shows that an item which stands out from its surroundings is disproportionately more memorable than uniform ones around it. A page of only text sections, however well-written, gives a visitor nothing distinctive to remember it by. One well-placed, unrepeated photo band per page gives them something specific to recall later — which matters more for a solo-operator studio competing on memorability, not ad spend.

Novelty and the picture superiority effect

People remember images substantially better than words alone (the picture superiority effect), and attention research shows novel stimuli capture and hold gaze longer than familiar or repeated ones. That's the specific reason none of these images are reused across pages — a repeated stock photo reads as template filler and gets tuned out the same way banner ads do (a phenomenon researchers call banner blindness). A unique image per page keeps each one from blending into the last.

Subtle motion as an attention cue, not a distraction

The human visual system is highly tuned to detect motion — it's a basic attentional reflex, not a learned behavior. Halo effect — visual craft implies overall competence

The halo effect describes how a positive impression in one area (here, visual polish) unconsciously colors judgment of unrelated areas (here, technical competence). It's a real cognitive bias, not something to lean on dishonestly — which is why it's paired with, not substituted for, the actual evidence this site is built on: verifiable PageSpeed scores, a public incident log, and every claim linked to a source. The visual polish earns attention; the evidence is what has to hold up once that attention arrives.
