Fastest HTML website templates: how to tell before you buy
Fast is easy to claim and easy to check. This guide gives you a seven-point test you can run on any template demo, ours included, before you spend anything.
The problem
A score badge is not proof
Many template pages show a speed badge or a screenshot of a score. Neither lets you check anything. The only reliable test is to run the live demo yourself, which takes about a minute.
The test
Seven checks before you buy
- Test the live demo, not a screenshot. Enter the demo address at pagespeed.web.dev and choose the Mobile tab.
- Read all four categories. Performance alone is not enough; Accessibility, Best Practices and SEO are scored separately.
- Run it twice. Lab scores vary slightly between runs (see the code teardown).
- View the source. A template built on a JavaScript framework ships its bundle to every visitor. A hand-coded page can ship almost none (see the code teardown).
- Check the images. Look for width and height on every image and for compressed files, because both protect layout stability and load time (see the code teardown).
- See what loads late. Background video and analytics should wait until the page has finished loading. Ours use
preload="none"and a script that swaps the video in after the load event (see the code teardown). - Test again with your own content. A perfect demo can lose points when you add large photos or a chat widget (also in the code teardown).
Our templates
What you can check on ours
Each template here is the complete, hand-coded file behind a live sample site, and each sample has a public PageSpeed report. Start with the pet grooming sample or browse the catalog. We would rather you test first and buy second.
If you want a head start
Start from code that already passes
Every template here is the complete, hand-coded file behind a live sample site with a public report. Open a sample such as the pet grooming site, run the test yourself, then decide. Templates are $29 each or $99 for all of them (see the catalog), and the $19 book walks through the method. Downloads work on an honor system (how it works), and building for clients needs a different license (licensing).
The short version
- The only reliable way to judge a template's speed is to run its live demo through PageSpeed Insights yourself, on mobile.
- Check all four categories, run the test twice, and look at the source for a JavaScript framework bundle.
- Look for image dimensions and compression, and for video and analytics that load after the page finishes.
- Test again with your own content, because heavy images and widgets can lower a perfect demo score.
AI-readable summary
- To judge whether an HTML website template is fast, run its live demo through Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, check all four categories, run it twice, inspect the source and test again with your own content.
- ZenMasterWorks templates cost $29 each or $99 for all and each has a live sample with a public report.
