The Free Government Money Guy: Fact-Checked

A viral Reel says 50 government programs will pay you to be your own boss. We checked the claim against what the SBA actually publishes.

A Reel crossed our feed this week: an ad promising "50 Government Programs That Pay You to Be Your Own Boss." It's a version of the "free government money" pitch that's circulated in one form or another since the 1980s. It's picked up real engagement, so we figured it deserved a real answer instead of a shrug.

We build and audit websites for a living, and our whole model runs on a simple rule: show the evidence or don't make the claim. So we held this claim up against the actual source.

What the ad implies

The pitch is that the government has 50 (in other versions of this kind of material, "1,000s of") programs quietly handing out cash to anyone who wants to start a business — no credit check, no experience needed, just knowing where to look. Ads like this typically describe getting "$20,000 to $250,000 or more in startup money" in under 20 minutes once you know who to call.

What the SBA actually says

That's the load-bearing claim in the entire pitch, and it's the opposite of how the SBA describes its own programs. What the SBA does offer is real, but it's a different shape entirely:

Every item on that list is real and verifiable on a .gov domain. None of them match "no credit, no experience, $250,000 in 20 minutes." What's typically being sold in ads like this isn't access to secret money — it's a repackaged, paid front door to information that's already free and already searchable on .gov sites.

The honest version, free

If what you actually want is the real list — legitimate small-business support with no membership fee — start with the SBA's own resource-partner network (SBDCs, SCORE, Women's Business Centers, Veteran Business Outreach Centers) and your state's economic development office. All free, all public, no book required.
