Tax and accounting is a technology-behind industry, and the gap is specific: most small firms still don't give clients a real online way to work with them. An independently commissioned study of 1,001 small businesses found that 63% said their accountant doesn't offer an online portal at all, even though 56% called one an important feature — and 78% said they'd consider switching to a firm that used better technology.¹ We built a reusable blueprint around what a real tax preparer site should actually do about that.
Why this industry is so underserved
Most tax practices are small by nature — the average firm has about 3.2 employees, and independent preparers make up roughly 60% of the market² — which means most owners are preparers first and web-technology buyers a distant second. Clients keep coming back every year out of habit and trust, so a dated, portal-free website rarely costs a firm any visible business. Until, that is, a client compares notes with a friend whose accountant lets them upload documents from their phone.
What a tax preparer site actually needs
- A secure intake path that doesn't require an office visit. Clients increasingly expect to upload documents, book a consultation, or start an engagement without ever walking in — especially the 78% who say they'd switch firms for better technology.¹
- Real service pages, not a vague list. Individual returns, business returns, IRS representation, and tax planning are different searches with different intent, and each deserves its own clear section.
- Credentials that are checkable, not just claimed. A real CPA license number, EA number, or PTIN — not just a badge graphic — the same "receipts, not vibes" standard that matters everywhere else in a tax relationship.
- A path for people who are behind or in trouble. Unfiled prior years and IRS notices are common, high-anxiety situations, and a site that speaks to them directly converts better than one that only markets to people already caught up.
The blueprint
We built this as a reusable pattern rather than a one-off site: a hero built around credibility and secure intake, a dedicated "behind on filing or received a notice" band that speaks directly to a high-anxiety search, real service sections, and three build packages sized for where a practice actually is — a focused solo page, a full trust-building practice site, or a multi-preparer firm build.
